America Noviter Delineata
This landmark map by Hondius, incorporated the influence of Mercator along with the latest information, and became a pattern for cartographers to follow. Initially engraved and published by Jodocus Hondius, this map was trimmed, and republished by his son Henrico in 1636. This map influenced a generation of cartographers who studied and reproduced this map in their own works, such as Merian and Janson. The map itself shows us an intricately detailed view of the new world, with a substantively accurate South America and a North America that still contained a severe distortion of the western coast. Insets show us the theorized nature of the North Pole and the fabled contours of a supposed South Pole. The oceans abound with dramatically illustrated masted ships and numerous sea monsters. Handsome strap work surrounds the title block, as well as the map insets. Two small vignettes in the interior of South America appear to show us Europeans meeting an native king, and in Brazil, a small party of cannibals. This is a map of the western hemisphere full of the legend, speculation and wonder of the time.

Framed "Carte Des Nouvelles Decouvertes, Extrait d'une Carte Japonoise de l'Univers"
This beautifully framed map was made by Robert de Vaugondy for an ENCYCLOPEDIE by Denis Diderot. This map has exceptionally wide margins, and bright hand coloring. Diderot's maps were intended to further an understanding of the Western Coast of America, and NE Asia, during a time period immediately prior to Cook's first voyage where numerous theories abounded on these regions, especially the NW Coast of America. This original copper plate engraving is in excellent condition. The map shows the northern part of Siberia and the coast of Asia and appears to be a companion of maps #1. Other details include "The Sea of the West" explorer routes, and descriptive text. Framed with a unique wooden moulding, triple matting which bring out the colors of the map, and a fillet. Fantastic gift for and history buff! All Art Source framing use archival materials including acid-free mat board and UVA protective glass.
